Italian combined preposition
One of the hardest topics of the Italian grammar, in a simple table chart
A combined preposition is a simple preposition (di, a, da, in, su) joined to a definite article (il, l’, lo, la, gli, i, le) in a new, single word.
There are nine simple prepositions: di, a, da, in, su, con, per, tra and fra. As you can see, the only ones that combine with an article are di, a, da, in and su.
Take a look at the following examples:
La lezione comincia alle (a + le) nove = the lesson starts at nine.
Nei (in + i) parchi ci sono molti alberi = in the parks there are many trees
La festa degli (di + gli) amici = the friends’ party
Il libro è sul (su + il) tavolo = the book is on the table
Il treno parte dalla (da + la) stazione = the train departs from the station

Good news! The simple prepositions con, per, tra and fra always remain separate from the article. The combined preposition rule doesn’t apply to them.

Andiamo a Roma con il treno = we are going to Rome with the train
Questo regalo è per il tuo compleanno = this present is for your birthday
La stazione è tra il museo e la banca = the station is between the museum and the bank
